Fun: If you've got an XBox 360, you really need to get your hand on one
or two wireless controllers. These controllers are GREAT for keeping your gaming
area free of clutter. To start with, the controller is much smaller than the
standard XBox controller was. For control items, you start with the standard
blue X, yellow Y, red B and green A buttons. There are two thumbsticks, one on
the upper left and one in the center right. There is also a directional (d-pad)
in the lower left. Next, you have a pair of shoulder buttons at the "top" of the
unit, up above the other buttons. You also have a pair of triggers below those
shoulder buttons. Finally, you have a center X button that can be used to turn
the console on and off, plus a "start" and "back" tiny white buttons on either
side of it. The unit has a rechargeable battery unit inside it, the size of two
AA batteries. You have to buy a recharger set SEPARATELY that lets you charge up
while you play. In essence you plug the charger into the back of the controller
- and the other end into the USB port in the front of the XBox 360 unit. So you
play with the controller "wired" as it charges up. When it's fully charged
again, you just pop off the wire and keep playing. The range of the wireless
unit is 30', which is probably much further than anybody is really going to even
try playing a game at. The wireless is much easier on your hand - no cable
holding you down - plus it's a great help in keeping your gaming area organized.
You can easily pass the controller from person to person, and visitors can come
and go without tripping over wires. The documentation says you can get 40 hours
of gameplay between charges, but if you have features such as vibration on, that
sucks the time down to maybe 8-10 hours. It's up to you of course - I personally
like having vibration on because it is often important for gameplay to get those
warning signals. Still, even if I have to plug the cables in every 10 hours or
so to give it a juice boost, I still love wireless!! Highly recommended.

Really shows off the gorgeous graphics of the XBox 360

If you're a racing fan, this is a must-have game for your XBox 360. If you're just looking to see how good the graphics are on the XBox 360, at lesat rent this game. It's quite impressive!!

You choose from a number of real cars. There are Ferraris, Jaguars, Aston Martins, Lamborghinis, McLarens and much more. The cars look AMAZINGLY good with full detail, and you can choose the color as well.

You race your car through a number of circuits around some quite recognizeable towns. You end up in London, Las Vegas, New York City, Tokyo and Nurburgring. Each location is full of detail. When you drive down the river Thames in London you pass Big Ben. Vegas has gorgeous hotels that I remember from my visits there.

Doing fun stunts earns you Kudos points, so not only are you aiming to win your races to earn cash, but you also want to rack up Kudos points. That makes even the easier races fun, as you do spins, slides and much more. The world you're in is quite interactive. The people watching the race take flash pictures as you drive past - but if you crash into a fence near them, they all cringe. There are clouds floating by overhead. Mostly, though, there are other racers on the track trying to get by you and steal the lead.

We found the controls to be very intuitive, and the cars handled quite nicely. Note that this is a GAME racing system - i.e. it's not pure realistic. If you smash into a wall at 100mph, your car does not explode into a thousand shards of metal. You simply spin off gently and keep going. That being said, most gamers really don't want a "realistic" racing game. They want a fun one, and this game delivers across the board.

I have to admit that for me, half the fun in this game is the gorgeous landscapes. In Vegas, you drive past the Excalibur and Treasure Island, and the details are picture-perfect. New York, New York is by the track in quite amazing clarity.

I also love the sound in this game - because the soundtrack options are simply awesome. You can choose from a number of soundtracks, from classical to alternative to J-Pop and more. You can even stream in music from your iPod or other MP3 player!

I suppose if you hate racing games, you probably will find this game to be boring. You're just racing cars around in circles with pretty scenery and great sound. But you'd have to be in the minority to not enjoy this game. The cars are amazing. The graphics are amazing. The sound is amazing. Because of the multiplayer options, including up to 8 simultanous live players online, you could play this game for eternity and still find people to challenge you. If you want even MORE of a challenge, you can even create your own custom route through their maps! You can design your very own custom lap system and challenge others to play on it. Talk about variety!

Highly, highly recommended!

Xbox Arcade Unplugged is a collection of some of the best-selling games from the Xbox Live Arcade on the Xbox 360. Included is 6 games, 3 demos and a 1 month subscription to live.

1 month of live (retail $8) - It is a great service for online play of any game. You can download and rent movies, buy tv episodic content, and chat with friends, families, and strangers around the world.

Bejeweled 2 (retail $10)- A popular puzzle game in which you try to match up jewels in order to get to the next level. There are several modes to Bejeweled, some unlockable. The game is a real challenge, and if you like puzzle games, you will be pleased with Bejeweled 2.

Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved (retail $5) - An instant classic in the tradition of Asteroids. You fly around in a 'ship' trying to destroy geometric shapes, each having their own characteristics. As you progress, the games elements get harder, and more shapes are introduced. A fantastic game that is fun for just about everyone.

Hardwood Backgammon (retail $5) - Classic Backgammon action. You can play against a friend on the couch, vs. the computer, or take on someone online on Xbox Live. Hardwood Backgammon is also Camera Enabled.

Outpost Kaloki X (retail $10) - A strategy game in which you are in outer space, attempting to manage power and research. A variety of missions and scenarios to keep you busy are included.

Wik and the Fable of Souls (retail $10) - A crazy game about a small creature who uses his tongue to eat bugs and whip around treelimbs. Part puzzle game, part action, this game can be very challenging. There are over 120 levels in the game, each one being more difficult than the last.

Texas Hold 'em (retail $10) - This may be the junk of the bundle. A poorly executed attempted interface leaves most poker players wondering why they didn't copy any of the popular online poker sites and their interface. Often multiplayer works too slow, while you wait for others to take their turn. There are some scenarios to work on in single player. Overall, it isn't too bad, but it leaves a lot to be desired amongst poker players.

Also included are demos of Uno, Marble Blast Ultra, and Feeding Frenzy.

Uno is the classic card game everyone knows. It translates to Xbox Live very well and is camera enabled. It has a wide variety of gameplay options, including partner play. Marble Blast Ultra is a game in which you try to move your marble around to the exit point. Each level is brilliantly designed, colorful, and challenging. Feeding Frenzy is a great game for all ages, in which you start each level as a small fish, eating other fish and growing as you do so.

If you bought everything in this package for retail price, it would cost you $58. Even if you only need a couple of the $10 games, it's still agreat bargain with the 1 month of Xbox Live for free.

Based on the old, excellently performing Xbox S-controller with added bumpers in place of black/white buttons. Thankfully they dumped the large "Duke" controller altogether. This controller can turn on/off the 360 remotely, act as a remote, works on a PC, connects to a headset, etc... It rumbles -- the $600 PS3 doesn't. It connects FLAWLESSLY. Never fails to connect and the connection never drops, ever, even though it's wireless. Battery life is extremely LONG - you'll be able to use the thing forever without recharging. Attachements exist for charge & play, Accessories for quick charge. Options for regular or rechargable batteries.

Having an excellently designed controller is key.

Removing the white/black buttons, so your right hand can rest in a position with your left hand -- both wrapping around the "stalks" of the controller, was a good decision in my opinion. It might take some people some time to get used to the bumpers. They are placed in a location where you might have previously rested your right and left index fingers when not pulling the trigger.

3rd party wireless controllers for the original xbox SUCKED! The connection dropped, they would malfunction, or else worked okay but were not rechargable (Logitech). Everything about this 360 controller is right!

The skin was easily applied with no air-bubbles or errors and the tips online were very useful. It lined up perfectly and the material allows for reapplication if you need to peel it up and retry. I would of liked to purchase a skin to match the rest of the Xbox, but the faceplate looks good by itself.

The skin itself looks great. It goes and comes off very easily. It just takes some time to get the skin on perfect, but don't worry if you mess up you can just take it off and re-adjust it. I also recommend getting the whole set for the whole 360 because it looks kind of awkward with just the white plastic on the sides. Also see my Customer Pictures®.

Red Ring of Failure

Is your Xbox 360 still working? You must be one of the lucky ones.

Over 18 million Xbox 360s have sold through since the console's launch in November 2005, but just how many of those are still working? Squaretrade, a company that specializes in providing warranty support to purchasers of electronic goods from various manufacturers, claims 16% of Xbox 360s experience a hardware failure within six to ten months after a warranty purchase. Three out of every five failures were for the infamous "Red Ring of Death" general hardware failure error, a problem often linked to overheating.

The Xbox's figures compare poorly to competing consoles, which have a failure rate of around 3% -- and if anything, the Squaretrade figure underestimates the scale of the Xbox 360's reliability issues. It's a good bet that some buyers of Squaretrade warranties went straight to Microsoft after experiencing hardware issues and don't factor into the 16% number. On its company blog, Squaretrade pointed out that failure rates are "certain to go up" as the machines in their study group grow older.

Microsoft is cagey about coughing up official failure rate figures, which has lead some commentators to speculate about the actual severity of the problem. Luke Plunkett, a blogger on respected games news site Kotaku, said in a recent post that if the real failure rate wasn't in the 30-40% range, he'd "wolf down humble pie until his sides split."

Plunkett's sides are likely safe. Stories of 360 owners making their way through eight or nine consoles aren't hard to find, but to its credit, Microsoft has been working with the affected individual in at least one of those cases to lessen the impact of the constant failures.

Even so, there's a surprise lurking for consumers who return their 360s for repair. When you purchase content -- arcade games, extra tracks, etc. -- over Xbox Live, it's playable by any user on the console you used to make the transaction. If you go to a different console and sign in with your gamertag, you can download the content and play it only for as long as you're signed in. Once you move back to your main machine, it will no longer be playable. Sounds like a handy system to let you take the content you own from place to place, right?

But the trick with this system is that once a broken machine returns from its little vacation, it generally has sufficient internal changes to make it look, to Xbox Live, like a different console. So all your downloaded content -- which, if you're a heavy user, could amount to hundreds of dollars worth of purchases -- are only accessible to one gamertag, and only when the console has a live internet connection.

Getting this situation resolved can be difficult. Affected users have reported having to make repeated calls to the Xbox support line, often to no avail. Some fortunate individuals were able to eventually convince the MS reps to refund all the points they'd spent so they could repurchase all the affected content, although they had to do it using a different gamertag.

How to Avoid Hardware Problems

• Air it out. Many failures are attributed to the inadequate cooling system of early-model 360s, so anything you can do to give it an easier time will pay off. Make sure you put the console in a place with cool, steady airflow.
• Move it and lose it. Don't change the orientation of the console when it's running. The DVD drive's running gear isn't as well secured as it could be, so knocking over a vertically-standing console can cause the machinery to collide with the disc surface. Characteristic circular scratches are the result and are generally fatal for the game.
• Think new. Thanks to a well-publicized cooling system redesign, newer machines are less likely to suffer problems. Any console bought in the last six months or so should have much better chances of surviving.

Red Ring of Death: What to do

Is it a "real" red ring of death? Somewhat confusingly, the true red ring error only has three of the four quarters of the ring illuminated. If all four are lit up, you have a much simpler problem: your A/V cable is loose!

Enterprising 360 owners have discovered a homebrewed way to fix the problem, although it only works for a short period of time. It involves turning on your console, wrapping it tightly in a towel, and leaving it on for 20-25 minutes. This might void your warranty from Microsoft, so consider yourself warned.

If all else fails, hit up the Xbox web site to request a warranty repair. They'll send you a cardboard "coffin" for you to return your console and send back a fixed machine in a few weeks. The official warranty was extended to three years for this specific problem, so even launch-day 360s are technically still covered.
